Occupational Summary:
The Director of Project Engineering is responsible for directing the entire scope of the Engineering IPT (Integrated Product Team). Provides technical expertise, analysis and direction for the development and implementation of processes required for successful program delivery. Directs engineering activities for a variety of programs while meeting performance targets. Provides leadership to Project Engineers to ensure completion of on time deliverables and within budget. Responsible for the quality of deliverables, and maintains customer relationships at all levels. Provides regular status reports against established program milestones, develops and implements recovery plans for yellow and red programs (i.e. schedule, technical performance), oversees all meetings and the integrated product team (kick-off through project close).
Duties and Responsibilities (essential functions):
  1. Ensures engineering project plans reach performance targets within time, budget and customer requirements.
  2. Determines objectives, schedules, and resource budgets for engineering. 
  3. Reviews ongoing programs for adherence to established budgets and schedules (cost, schedule, manpower, and performance).
  4. Supports sales and marketing with our customer request for quotation (RFQ) and estimate the engineering effort and budget.
  5. Ensures bid and proposal requirements are met in the preparation and documentation of bids and proposals. 
  6. Controls program changes with regards to engineering.
  7. Represents engineering at program milestone reviews, production meetings, customer meetings etc. 
  8. Identifies, assesses, monitors and mitigates risk throughout the program life cycle. 
  9. Develops and implements corrective action plans when deviations from budgets and/or schedules are evident.
  10. Drives for design corrective action strategies where required.
  11. Performs variance analyses of schedule and cost on a formal and informal basis and presents them to executive management. 
  12. Interfaces with airframe manufacturer, vendors and customers and government agencies (FAA, CAA etc.) for various projects.
  13. Shares resource or technical requirements with other business units.
  14. Drives standardized tools and processes for the project engineering department.
  15. Creates and sustains a well-organized, focused, and committed team.
  16. Develops direct reports as well as ensures that direct reports are developing their teams and takes corrective action as necessary.
  17. Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualification Requirements:
  1. Knowledge and Skills:
  2. Requires a technical customer management or engineering background with proven leadership experience.
  3. Strong experience in aerospace or automotive industry.
  4. Must have a thorough understanding of the principles of project and program planning and life cycle from inception to delivery.
  5. Requires leadership and management skills, particularly in influence management, negotiation and conflict resolution.
  6. Must have strong customer relations and interpersonal skills.
  7. Effective collaboration skills and strategy development with peers, cross functional teams and senior leaders.
  8. Advanced knowledge of project management tools and procedures.
  9. Knowledge of, AS9100, Failure Mode Effect Analysis (FMEA), FAA, Lean Manufacturing and Systems Engineering.
  10. Requires an understanding of lean and process improvement principles. 
  11. Must be highly organized and able to work in a very fast paced environment.
  12. Strong understanding of cash flow management and budget principles.
  13. Strict adherence to meeting scheduling deadlines and holding individuals accountable to meet customer requirements.
  14. Must be able to train managers to be effective leaders.
  15. Knowledge of CAD strongly preferred.
  16. Requires a strong working knowledge of the standard suite of office software products (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project, et. al.) 
Education and Experience:
  1. Bachelor’s Degree in a related Engineering discipline is required.
  2. 10 years of proven engineering or program management related experience required preferably in the commercial aviation industry, or within a comparable technical and regulated industry may be acceptable. 5 years leadership experience required. Systems engineering experience is desired.
  3.  PMP certification is preferred.
