Director, Air Traffic Management and Airfield Operations

Job Purpose
Manage day to day tactical ATC issues on behalf of American Airlines and promote American’s strategies for ATC modernization worldwide via constructive collaboration with the Federal Aviation Administration and other ANSPs, as well as recognized industry forums. 
Principal Duties and Responsibilities    
  • Support safe, expeditious, and efficient movement of AA aircraft in the national airspace system and on the airport surface
  • Initiate actions to improve tactical and strategic air traffic control procedures, operations, and policies affecting AA operations
  • Serve as the primary AA contact for FAA Air Traffic Operations (ATO) personnel at local, regional, national, and international levels
  • Actively participate as a member and seek leadership positions in various air traffic management and airport operations forums to steer airspace and airport design modifications which will improve current and future operations for AA (A4A, ACI, FAA CDM subgroups, FAA CSG, Eurocontrol, IATA, ICAO, FAA NCF, RTCA, etc.)
  • Maintain a working knowledge of ATC policies and procedures as they pertain to AA operations worldwide
  • Coordinate all ATC initiatives with the Director, Dispatch Operations or his/her designee
  • Work closely with the Flight Technical Operations department to ensure technical developments meet the present and future needs of AA and align with corporate priorities
  • Review, analyze, and recommend an AA position on legal and legislative correspondence circulated by AA Regulatory and Airport Affairs departments
  • Proactively support the ATC and airport surface operations needs of the Gateways, Hubs, and spoke station leaders
  • Lead, train and mentor a team of Air Traffic Managers who are responsible for supporting AA ATC operations in specific region
  • Communicate ATC and airfield operations issues to leadership in a timely manner
  • Take ownership to remove roadblocks, foster a caring culture, develop collaborative relationships and communicate effectively with frontline team members
  • Ensure compliance with IOC and AA Policies and Procedures involving air traffic control

  • Initiate activities to achieve maximum efficiency and throughput as it applies to ATC handling of AA flights
  • Coordinate ATC system changes within the Integrated Operations organization and with supporting organizations including Airport Affairs, Corporate Real Estate, Network Planning, Regulatory Affairs and Gateways and Hub Control Centers
  • Negotiate directly, or via constructive collaboration to ensure fair, equitable, and efficient ATC services for AA flights
  • Actively participate in both industry and internal working groups/committees related to improving ATC operations and procedures, and lead the bi-weekly CNS/ATM meeting between the Air Traffic Management/Airfield Operations team, the Flight department and Regulatory Affairs
  • Initiate actions to improve tactical air traffic control procedures, operations, and policies affecting AA
  • Establish and maintain a network of industry peers that facilitates constructive collaboration and exchange of operational information
  • Monitor and influence development of future internal ATM decision support tools which optimize AA operations and support ATC Coordinator business processes
  • Establish metrics to measure the operational impact of the work performed by the ATMs and actively engage with the ATMs to facilitate meeting and/or exceeding the goals
  • Establish an ATM succession plan
  • Support team member training and professional development
  • Ensure compliance with AA budget policies and procedures
  • Establish, monitor, and meet budgetary goals
  • 20+ years of FAR 121 Dispatch and/or Air Traffic Control experience
  • 5+ years of airspace redesign experience
  • Action oriented results-driven leader with a natural aptitude for engaging employees across workgroups to achieve stated goals, and a proven ability to lead senior team members
  • Proven ability to build and facilitate relationships at all levels of the FAA ATO, chiefly System Operations
  • Exceptional understanding of and participation in industry forums whereby operators influence ATC modernization plans of the FAA and international ANSPs, including but not limited to A4A, ACI, AOPA, CDM, IATA, ICAO, NBAA, and RTCA
  • Excellent understanding of the function of key FAA automation systems, including but not limited to ATOP, ERAM, TBFM, TFDM, and TFMS
  • Deep understanding of NextGen airspace technologies including ADS-B In, ADS-B Out, PBN, RNP/RNAV
  • Bachelor’s degree with an emphasis on airline and/or ATC operations or equivalent professional experience

  • Exceptional understanding of the FAA ATO and NextGen organizations, air traffic control and federal advisory forums
  • Demonstrated ability to manage conflicting priorities and expectations in a high volume, fast paced operational environment
  • Outstanding time management skills with ability to multitask and efficiently balance workload including planning, organizing and providing leadership for a variety of assignments in parallel
  • Excellent analytical skills and problem-solving capability
  • Highly effective with team building, servant leadership and motivational ability
  • Outstanding ability to use sound judgment, take initiative and be accountable for making decisions
  • Strong ability to partner and develop solid working relationships with industry peers and other ATC experts worldwide
  • Outstanding collaboration and negotiation skills 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with ability to effectively interact with employees at all levels within organization, as well as external vendors
  • Energetic, forward-thinking and creative individual with high ethical standards
  • Strong ability to review and synthesize large amounts of data, interpret findings and simply communicate complex outcomes
  • Ability and willingness to be on-call and travel approximately 40% of the time
