Sr. Accountant

Position Purpose
Manages the general fund, reviews transactions for classification and expenditures, resolves differences on transfer requests by budget owners, performs audit of control ledgers, prepares timely reports on complex accounts, assists in preparing audit worksheets and supporting schedules, controls account balances and reconciles differences.

Essential Job Functions
Accounting
  • Classifies, records, and summarizes numerical and financial data to compile and maintain financial records according to governmental accounting principles and district procedures.
  • Reconciles differences of account balances and external sources.
  • Manages the general fund; audits and verifies control ledgers.
  • Reviews financial reimbursement reports for federal, state, and local agencies.
  • Computes and prepares data for journal entry and budget transfers.
  • Prepares income statements, balance sheets, consolidated statements, and other statements and reports.
  • Monitors and reconciles expenditures with budget availability.
  • Sets up and maintains account controls, logs, and files.
  • Performs cost accounting activities, bank reconciliation, or accounting for grant expenditures.
  • Reviews and verifies accuracy of journal entries, accounting methods, and procedures.
Administration
  • Works with administrators, principals, directors, and staff regarding budget and accounting issues.
  • Communicates with regulatory agencies to determine financial reporting compliance.
  • Reads and interprets technical and/or legal documentation.
  • Assists with external audits.
Records and Reports
  • Prepares timely audit schedules and financial statements according to federal, state, and GASB standards.
  • Compiles, maintains, and files all reports, records, and other documents required, including auditable records and financial statements.
Other
  • Assigns work to accounting clerk and other employees engaged in accounting activities.
 
Supervisory Responsibilities
  • Supervises work of accountants

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of governmental accounting and auditing principles established by the Governmental Accounting System Board (GASB).
  • Knowledge of computerized accounting systems.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education and students.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret financial data, evaluate accounting problems, develop data, and recommend improved procedures.
  • Ability to use software to develop complex accounting reports, spreadsheets, and databases.
  • Ability to organize and coordinate work.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both oral and written forms.
  • Ability to engage in self-evaluation with regard to performance and professional growth.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work.

Travel Requirements
  • Travels to school district buildings and professional meetings as required.
