Manager, Asset Management

This job is a member of the Treasury Team within the Finance Division. As an integral part of the Treasury organization, Asset Management oversees over $30 billion in various retirement and benefit plan assets. Asset Management is also responsible for advising the Employee Benefits Committee ("EBC"), which exercises fiduciary oversight of the various plans' investment activities.  Oversee the investment activities of American's various defined benefit, defined contribution and health & welfare plans. The Manager, Asset Management reports to the Managing Director and is primarily responsible for the strategy, design and execution of plan assets.
Specifically, you’ll do the following:
401(k) plans
  • Reviews performance of all funds and underlying managers based on standard investment metrics
  • Reviews performance with investment managers in person and through scheduled conference calls and onsite due diligence visits
  • Challenges investment advisors on existing and prospective investment funds and strategies; meets with prospective investment managers, advisors and consultants to keep up to date with industry trends and market opportunities
  • Constantly seeks to optimize strategic asset allocation of custom target date funds
  • Monitors performance of plans managed accounts provider, trustee and custodian, and investment advisors
  • Manages all administrative tasks necessary to manage plans, including invoice reconciliation, processing and payment
  • Works with consultant and investment advisor to prepare quarterly fund fact sheets for all funds
  • Manages transition events ensuring timely execution in a cost efficient manner
  • Onboard new investment managers, negotiates investment management agreements and fees
  • Reviews plan accounting reports with trustee on a quarterly basis for all fund options
  • Reviews, analyzes and prepares quarterly investment performance presentations to EBC
  • Meets and presents to the EBC to review 401(k) investment quarterly performance and other special topics
About The Job (Continued)
Defined Benefit plans
  • Works closely with investment advisor to set the asset allocation strategy for the master defined benefit plan trust
  • Develops creative solutions for ensuring defined benefit plans are fully funded over a stated time horizon
  • Meets with investment advisor on a monthly basis to review investment performance of trust and underlying strategies and other special topics
  • Develops models to determine future funding requirements based on changes to assets, liabilities and other variables impacting funded status
  • Prepares monthly pension updates for CFO reviews
  • Liaison with actuary and other consultants to determine funding strategies, adoption of new actuarial assumptions, pension derisk strategies etc.
  • Assists in administrative tasks to open accounts in international locations, trustee fee reconciliation, payment and processing etc.
  • Works closely with corporate accounting for year-end financial statement preparation, audits and other reviews
  • Endowments and Foundations and other plans
  • Recommends asset allocation, monitor and rebalance investments of American's Foundations and Endowments and presents investment performance to Boards each quarter
  • Oversees the investment management activities of the Canadian and other international defined benefit and defined contribution plans as well as various health and welfare plans
  • Coordinates with Retirement Strategy, Medical Benefits, Corporate Accounting, Tax, Legal, Labor, Financial Planning and Analysis on all aspects of all plans
  • Attends and represents American at industry events such as conferences
  • Requires travel up to 10% of the time
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant field or equivalent experience/education
  • 5 years of experience in an investment management, investment banking or asset management setting
  • Proven, self-motivated, results orientation with patience, perseverance, humility, and diplomacy
  • Possess intellectual curiosity; strong interest for the investment markets and the intellectual enthusiasm to understand the management of a broad range of asset classes
  • Self-starter with executive presence and the ability to manage multiple projects effectively involving multiple retirement plans
  • Strong problem solving and project management skills, with proven track record of performing complex assignments under tight deadlines while maintain
  • superior quality in work products
  • Ability to manage external consultants, advisors, lawyers to complete assignments
  • Commitment to quality, pride in work and accepts complete ownership of responsibilities
  • Strong attention to detail with constant desire to learn and improve

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree
  • Investment experience managing corporate defined benefit and defined contribution plans
  • CFA charter holder or progress toward attaining a CFA charter
