The Director, Talent Development leads the overall Talent Development team and part of the People Team at American.  This team is responsible for two key areas:
  1. Developing and driving an impactful leadership and professional development strategy, and deploying the infrastructure globally for all team members at American to grow in each of the identified leadership attributes to achieve the airline’s stated strategic objectives
  2. Supporting Targeted Development programs that focus on emerging and future leaders, minority and female development, and executive education partnerships.
 
This position reports to the Managing Director, Talent Strategy & People Development, and is the principal leader for global talent development for the company.  This role collaborates closely with Enterprise Learning and Engagement, People Business Partners, Talent Management, Learning Delivery, Operations and Experience teams, and Business Unit leaders across the enterprise in a cohesive, caring, development and results focused environment.

Responsibilities / Duties:
  • Sets the strategy and creating the process for deciding what are the critical talent initiatives that this team will work on in conjunction with senior leadership
  • Constantly learns about what other companies are doing to develop next-generation talent development capabilities and shares that learning with colleagues so we can all apply that learning creatively to American Airlines
  • Establishes an ongoing process for listening to critical stakeholders about what is important to them
  • Consults with senior leaders and their teams to identify and design custom development experiences to support critical business objectives
  • Works closely with the Learning Delivery and Learning Operations teams to ensure effective and high-quality delivery of in-person experiences
  • Works closely with the Learning Experience team to design and develop digital learning/sustainment assets to support the overall strategy
  • Leads, coaches, and mentors a team of professionals so they achieve their goals and business results
  • Sustains the team charter, team and individual goals, team members’ roles and responsibilities, measurement of progress and success
  • Manages budgets, project plans, reporting and execution of large scale initiatives
  • Finds creative ways to raise a learning mindset across the company
  • Drives a mindset of understanding the influence of leaders on creating the right environment to support growth for each of the members in their span of care
  • Creates new and connects existing development initiatives by partnering with internal resources and external vendors.  Develops, manages, and maintains relationships with external vendors
  • Establishes relationships with leaders at all levels in the organization and maintains key relationships/partnerships throughout the organization
 
 
 
Qualifications
 
Required Qualifications
  • Minimum 8-10 years of Talent Development, Organization Development, or related experience
  • Minimum 5 years of managing a team
  • Experience managing multiple complex projects simultaneously
  • Experience leading and coaching teams
  • Experience consulting, facilitating and presenting to groups and leaders at all organizational levels
  • Strong budgeting and reporting skills
  • Strong Excel, PowerPoint, & Word skills
  • Proven expertise and global operational experience in enterprise wide Talent Development required
  • Bachelor's degree in Organizational Behavior, Organizational Leadership, Psychology, or related field

  • Ability to translate business strategy into measurable development objectives
  • Deep understanding of business and management principles involved in talent development, human resources methods and techniques, and the impact of it all on the business
  • Proven consultative ability and mindset to work with leaders and their teams to assess key skill gaps and design effective interventions
  • Exceptional collaboration and influence skills to create partnerships to implement change; consistently displays a readiness and willingness to share knowledge; is open to different perspectives and to building consensus
  • Ability to establish relationships with leaders at all levels and speak candidly to them as needed
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including facilitation/presentation skills; Ability to present ideas in business-friendly and user-friendly language
  • Process, tools and techniques to manage people-side of business change to achieve required business outcome
  • Ideally understands principles of transformational change and how to apply them
  • Ability to manage multiple, large scale projects with competing deadlines
  • Comfortable handling multiple tasks and demands in a fast-paced work environment
  • Strong judgment, decisiveness, and diplomacy skills
  • Highly self-motivated and self-directed
  • Ability to effectively operate in an environment of constant change and comfortable with ambiguity
